A gift from the Silver Lake Kitchen! At the 2025 Silver Lake Award Celebration, two treasured camp recipes were shared — one for OM Bread (Oatmeal Molasses : ) and another for Coffee Cake. May these live long in our continuing traditions.


Silver Lake Oatmeal Molasses Bread

Ingredients

  • 1 cup – Quick Oats
  • 1 1/2 tbsp – Butter
  • 1 package – Dry Yeast
  • 1/2 cup – Warm Water
  • 4 2/3 cups – Bread Flour
  • 1/2 cup – Molasses
  • 2 tsp – Salt
  • 1 1/2 cups – Granulated Sugar

Directions

  • Bring 2 cups water to boil. Remove from heat and stir in Quick Oats and Butter. Let stand for 1 hour.
  • Soak Yeast in Warm Water for 5 minutes. Stir until dissolved.
  • Add Molasses, Salt, Sugar, and Oatmeal mixture. Stir thoroughly.
  • Stir in Flour.
  • Knead dough for 8 minutes.
  • Allow to rise until double in size.
  • Divide into 2 sections and mold into loaves.
  • Let rise in a warm place, covered with a towel, until double in size.
  • Bake at 375° F for 35 minutes.

Silver Lake Sour Cream Coffee Cake

Ingredients

Cake:

  • 2 cups – White Sugar
  • 1 cup – Butter, softened
  • 2 – Large Eggs
  • 1 cup – Sour Cream
  • 1/2 tsp – Vanilla Extract
  • 2 cups – All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 tsp – Baking Powder
  • 1/8 tsp – Salt

Toppings:

  • 1/2 cup – Packed Brown Sugar
  • 1/3 cup – All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 tbsp – Melted Butter
  • 1 tsp – Ground Cinnamon

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375° F. Grease a 9″ x 13″ baking pan.

To Make the Cake:

  • Beat white sugar and 1 cup butter together in a large bowl with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
  • Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition; stir in sour cream and vanilla.
  • Mix in 2 cups flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Spread the batter in the prepared pan.

To Make the Topping:

  • Mix brown sugar, 1/3 cup flour, 2 tablespoons melted butter, and cinnamon together in a medium bowl.
  • Sprinkle the topping over the cake batter in the pan.

Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 40 minutes.

  1. I would like to know how I can help?

    I think the UCC is not being creative or open to expanding SLCC target market (parents) beyond those currently attending church. There are other denomination and organizations to market the camp. I am not sure the camp image is appropriate for a much wider audience. SLCC should have a message which will have a wider appeal.

    I hope this new independent grassroots organization is successful in its mission. We must save Silver Lake!
